Darlaston Plan for Neighbourhoods
Community Meeting Report – Darlaston Town Hall
Community Safety
Residents have raised concerns about road safety in Darlaston, particularly given the number of schools in the area. They have been in discussion with a local secondary school, which has also expressed support for measures to improve road safety and the introduction of cycle lanes.
In addition, residents have highlighted ongoing issues relating to safety, crime, and anti-social behaviour. They have identified a need to enhance CCTV coverage at key hotspot locations, including the town centre and parks to help address these concerns.
Pride in Place
Residents have expressed a strong desire for more community events and festivals in Darlaston, such as a dedicated “Darlaston Day” to celebrate the town’s identity and bring people together. There is particular interest in events that showcase local talent, music, food, and culture, helping to foster community pride and attract visitors from neighbouring areas. Residents have suggested seasonal festivals, markets, and family-friendly activities that make use of local parks and public spaces, creating opportunities for local businesses and community groups to get involved.
Alongside this enthusiasm for events, residents have also raised concerns about the overall cleanliness and appearance of the town centre. Many have described it as untidy, with ongoing problems related to littering and fly-tipping. Improving the environment and public spaces is seen as an important step in creating a town people can be proud of and that visitors will want to return to.
Derelict Sites
Residents have raised concerns about several derelict sites in Darlaston, including the former Weights and Measures building and the old Darlaston Fire Station. Local community groups have expressed an interest in taking over the former Weights and Measures building, and residents have voiced a strong desire to see these buildings restored and repurposed for community use. Residents highlighted a lack of provision for elderly people and people with vulnerabilities. Residents explored the possibility of creating a multicultural centre with activities for the young and old.
Heritage and History
Darlaston has a proud and rich history, and residents have expressed concern about the gradual loss of the town’s heritage. They have voiced a strong interest in establishing a local museum to celebrate Darlaston’s past. One suggestion put forward was to locate the museum in the old brewhouse in Darlaston Town.
Open Spaces
Residents raised concerns about the condition of the park on Cook Street, noting that it has become overgrown and now poses potential safety risks within a residential area. Similar concerns were expressed regarding the state of Victoria Park. A separate enquiry has been raised with Walsall Council regarding the issues at Victoria Park.
Many residents feel that Darlaston has become a “forgotten town” and expressed a strong desire to see its local identity restored and celebrated. They were also clear that the £20 million investment should be used to directly benefit the town and its residents, rather than to subsidise existing Council services.
